Francoise Athenais de Rochecho MORTEMART

1 NAME Madame /de Maintenon/

Mother of Francoise Marie de BOURBON, Mistress of King?

MAINTENON, pronounced man tuh NAWN, MARQUISE DE, pronounced mar KEEZ duh (1635-1719), was the second wife of King Louis XIV of France. She had great influence in France during his reign.

The future marquise was born Francoise d'Aubigne in Niort, France. In 1652, she married the much older Paul Scarron, who died in 1660. In 1669, she became governess to Louis XIV's children by his mistress, the Marquise de Montespan. But Louis grew to prefer the governess, giving her land and the title Marquise de Maintenon. After Louis's wife, Queen Marie-Therese, died in 1683, he secretly married Maintenon. Scholars disagree on the year of the marriage.

For more than 30 years, Maintenon was the king's trusted adviser. She was deeply religious and tried to raise moral standards at court. Just before Louis's death, Maintenon helped him burn hundreds of documents that could have damaged his historical reputation. In 1686, she founded a school for girls at St. Cyr. She retired there after Louis died in 1715.

This genealogy database was created in 2000 and has proved ever popular as a free resource over the years. Early in 2001 we created an automated version of the original data at that time, making a new database of around 40000 people. Access to this database was available for only £15 for a one off payment for a lifetime subscription.

The current database now has over 150000 people, has a free trial and still has a one off payment for life time access and only a few pounds more, after all this time.

To see what we are talking about click on the link below and sign up for your free trial with no obligation. We don't take any payment information from you. We send you a Paypal invoice which you can choose to pay or let your free trial lapse. You have nothing to lose but have plenty to gain.
